Cristiano Ronaldo became enraged after Bruno Fernandes failed to pass to him as Manchester United sought to break the deadlock early in their 0-0 draw with Watford.
Ronaldo had a disappointing afternoon as Manchester United lost for the third time in five Premier League games.
The 37-year-old had a goal disallowed for offside, then hit the post and hit teammate Anthony Elanga with a goal-bound shot.
However, he was denied a chance to score in the 12th minute when compatriot Fernandes passed to him.
Fernandes had a one-on-one with Ben Foster and if he had squared it to his right, Ronaldo would have had an open goal to finish in.
However, the midfielder decided to attempt for goal himself and saw his shot stopped by Foster, who became the Premier League’s oldest visiting goalkeeper to maintain a clean sheet against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Fernandes had eight efforts on goal throughout the afternoon, and his wayward finishing summed up United’s woes.
Ralf Rangnick’s team remains fourth in the table, but is only two points ahead of Arsenal, who has played three less games.
‘Our role as coaches is to help the squad create enough opportunities,’ Rangnick said following the draw. ‘If we’d only got two or three against Watford, we’d have to wonder why.’
‘However, the number of chances we had had to be enough to win the game.’ We need to be more focused in front of goal. It’s difficult to win if you miss that many shots.’
